To keep things concise.

70-300 with 2x: Cant do cos not enough light. And image quality would be badly affected. unless you do away with 2x converter and stick to 70 300.

SX50: Thats a whole different thing. It has great IS for birding. But zooming would be slow and IQ would not be as goos. Since you have got an interchangeable lens camera why not get another lens which is more worth it?

Prime telephoto: Definitely good image quality. Prime lenses are good for birding as you dont always require a zoom. If you can get a good price then go for it.

Overall, whats important for birding is a good fast AF and Image stabilization. Hope you can see clearer.

Hmmm. Looks like I'll be checking out a prime for the time being.....I did see a few Sigmas that sorta  fall within my price range though I'm somewhat worried about compatibility. Sigs seem to be the #1 contender for birding as they give you decidedly more options as opposed to Tammies, but I've heard they've got focusing issues with SLT cameras..well, at least the current ones do anyway. Thing is, I have an old Sigma 70-300 APO macro and while it was working I never had any difficulties with it's performance. Sad to say it's also got a bad internal autofocus...I can shoot with it but only in manual mode, but considering it was about 25 years old (and since I bought it for $50 from Goodwill ) I guess I shouldn't really complain. Welp, off to the hunt I guess....btw, does anyone know about how much it'd cost to repair a lens like a Tamron 200-400? I know I'm really grasping at straws but it's such a shame to lose it right now...anyone?

Also, as far as the Tamron 200-500...I can only dream about it right now..maybe Santa'll be generous this year!
