The SX50 still surprises me with it's features
Oct 21, 2012

Having the SX50 now for a couple of weeks, I still find some surprises with this camera not often mentioned on this forum.

Since the last 10 years I have used many SLR-like bridge camera's ranging from the Fuji Finepix 4900, 6900, S602, HS10 to a Sony HX100V and now the Canon SX50. And it is good to know that the fun you can have with these camera's is getting better and better every year.

I shoot mainly in good sunny weather (for indoors and at night I have a trusty 450D with a 10-22 efs lens), because this is where these type of camera's shine. I am not a "pixel peeper", because I think the framing of the shot is best made with the cam on location and this will give me more fun and satisfaction than cropping and editing afterwards. Also the small sensor is no match for any aps-size or full frame sensor of some other equipment out there.

As for my experience with the SX50, let me begin to show some samples of some functions not often mentioned here:

- First the digital zoom option. Normally I am hesitated to use such a zoom because it will always hurt the picture (severely with my old HX100V). But to my surprise the Canon does a pretty good job. There is a digital zoom 60x (1.2x, 1440mm) setting that is not very often mentioned. Some examples of the power of the SX50 zoom:

24mm  f4  1/640  iso80

150mm  f5  1/400  iso80

400mm  f5.6  1/400  iso80

1200mm  f6.5  1/400  iso80

 60x or 1.2x digital zoom  1440mm  f6.5  1/400  iso80

 75x or 1.5x digital zoom  1800mm  f6.5  1/400  iso80

 100x or 2x digital zoom  2400mm  f6.5  1/400  iso80

As you can see (especially with the originals), the 60x zoom (first step after the full optical is almost as clean as the 50x sample. Only after going one step further (75) the digital zoom is somewhat noticable. The 100x or 2x digital zoom is still nice, but I personally would only use it if I desperately want to have the shot.

My next surprise was the high ISO capability (up to iso3200) which I thougt would be horrible with this small sensor, but for that story I will make a new reply to this post.

See you later....
