In Feb 2009, I had two bodies with me : 5D MkII and 1D Mk III using the 24-105mm and 70-200mm f/4 IS. Both cameras performed well in the wet snow for 3 days and never died on me. I just kept wiping the camera dry whenever I had the chance. The other 7 days had perfect weather.
I think the 5D Mk III would be a better camera if you can afford and would perform better in higher ISO range if the weather is dull and raining snow.
Good advice overall in your post but he is going for 14 months so his real issues are long tern durability, it is the day after day relentless conditions that will matter more.
Sadly I can't offer any real constructive advice to him it is an alien environment to me, I suspect that talking to other scientist already out there would be more constructive.
