assuming you focused on the eye, the first photo, with veil behind the ear and lens essentially wide open you are likely beyond the in focus portion of the image. second image is likely stopped down two stops with deeper depth of field extending onto the front portion of the veil. you see acuity of focus fade as you progress backward on veil
first image is shot almost three stops higher ISO than second image (100 vs 640), not sure of noise characteristics of these sensors, but that could also be of issue.
