70-200 VRI Myth
Oct 20, 2012

I picked up a 20E TC III and tried it on my 70-200 VRI lens. I had read that this combination doesn't work well. In doing some testing at least on DX is actually Ok, I  would say that at least on a DX body like the D7000 it can work quite well if you stop down from f5.6 (wide open) to f8. In comparing the performance with my 1.7E TC II at f5.6 which I had always been happy with sharpness and AF.

I would say the 20 TC at f8 is slightly better than the 17 TC at f5.6 in sharpness (of course f5.6 is 2/3 a stop from f4.5). I did not obtain the same results on a FX body with the 20C III, and the 70-200 VRI. So I would not recommend this combination, and would suggest the newer VRII if you need to use TC's on FX because of some improvements in the newer model at the long end.
