It's all a matter of time, IMHO. You will have to wait for longer when opening full-size images in LR. In my MacPro 2009 (double quad-core 2,26GHz Xeon with 12Gb RAM) i find no problems whatsoever when loading, making thumbnails or indexing. Slowness is however noticeable when opening 100% views; my d300 NEFs open in 5 to 6 seconds, D800' take more than 10. Editing operations are also slower. I do not mind about file sizes since it's a matter of swapping harddisks for bigger ones, they just get filled sooner.
Unfortunately I do not find my Macbook Pro useable to edit those images. It's lower-specced than yours but not by much (one/two generations before, I believe, can't check now) and can't wait for 35 to 40 secs to open each file at 100% so it defeats the idea of getting my laptop with me for field assignments.

Precisions previously forgotten: my Snow Leopard iMac with quad i7, late '09 opens 100% views in about 10-12 sec. The Lion i5 Mac Air was bought early this year and it handles D800 files quite well; not as fast but surprisingly faster than one would imagine.
