Please help, Elements 10 ?

In elements 10 when I start to edit a raw, tiff or jpeg file, for example the healing brush. It always wants to convert from 16 bit to 8 bit. How do you keep in 16 bit, does cs5 or 6 do this ? I am using the free trial.
