If the objective is detail you might want to consider that a D800 image downsampled by a significant amount will show much greater detail than an image shot with a camera of that native resolution - i.e. a 24MP D800 image will show much greater detail and contrast than a 24MP D600 image.

Except the D800/E's noise performance is very different to the D600, which is rather better.
