I doubt significant improvement can be expected from firmware updates. Sony is not investing a lot in the development of the JPG engine. They had enough time to do so, and it is not rocket science. It is a matter of how much you are willing to invest, e.g. by buying that know-how from specialised vendors. It hasn't happened in the past when new products have been launched, and it certainly won't happen with a firmware update.
