I've changed my speculation. The D800 AA filter is unusual in that the IR cut filter is sandwiched between the Lithium Niobate layers, two in front, two behind. I'm thinking it's like that for a reason, and that the AA filter layers also have a role in the IR cutoff characteristic.

Thats going to make it hard for IR photography or astro photograhy guys. Maybe they will be the first to pull the entire filter assembly out of a D800.
