I have played around a little with the A99 vs D5mkIII ISO 12 800 samples. When adjusting the ACR settings to match the files (contrast, color, tonal curve, contrast) and also scaled the images to the same size, I find the Canon slightly less noisy than the A99. When downsampled to 50 percent pixel size the differences are more or less smoothed out. For prints the differnces will also be smoothed out, due to the rasterization process from pixels to printer dots.

Visual apperance would be a bit different though, due to differences in noise pattern, and not so much for detail (i.e. look at A99 shadow accutance).

How often do you present your images as 100 % view?

If not often, then I wold look at other than IQ when choosing between these two cameras.

Also, I had no problem tweaking the raw converter settings so that the Sony was the winner ... but this would be looked at as cheating.
