If the number of available frames remaining in the buffer remains the same when changing compression schemes, either you are looking at the wrong counter or you're not actually setting the compression. JPEG files are compressed after conversion from the RAW file in the memory buffer, while RAW files can't be compressed.
Sorry for the confusion, the counter I was referring to was the amount of images left that the memory card can support.
