However, ETTR isn't just for better noise in the shadows. My understanding is that you get a larger range of tones in the shadows if you are able to decrease exposure.

The flip side of having half the distinct tones in the brightest f-stop is (8096 yo 1,363 with 14 bits) that you have a very small number of distinct shades in the darkest f-stop.

Or not?
