Has anyone ever used the 24mm 1.4g in DX mode to achieve the effective focal length of 36mm on the D800?  I am trying to decide if it is worth getting the 35mm 1.4g.

Thanks in advance!!!

Can't you just crop?

Um, DX mode IS cropping, and produces approximately a 15MP file which is equivalent in FOV to that produced by a 35mm lens on FF.  Besides, it processes the image data faster and produces an immediately smaller file to PP.

To the OP...logic seems to dictate that using the 'sweet spot' of a lens (the 24mm) would produce a very nice image.
