100 macro, L or non L?

I have the 100f/2.8 nonL macro which I bought used, & is great on a tripod. I feel, however, that I may be loosing out on some handheld shots as my lens does not have IS. I have yet to try out the L version, so can those who have had both L & non L, give their opinions of the difference in IQ, if any, & is the IS 4 stops diiferent, or nearer 2-3? as you can't always trust manufacturers figures. It will be used for macro & non macro, on a 600D & 7D. Many thank's.
