Have you tried HDR? Your second shot would probbaly benefit, by bringing out shadow detail but still capturing all the colours in the stained glass windows. The 350D doesn't have HDR, but it has bracketing, which will allow you to use HDR software.

I've just returned from a trip to eastern Europe where I took quite a few church and cathedral indoor shots. I recently acquired a Sigma 12-24 wide angle zoom which was fun to play with. If you have an idle moment, check out my book "From Bohemia to the Balkans" on my website.
