40mm f2.8 is very sharp and 20% wider than the 50mm, but I would only suggest it in place of the 50, not as a complement.

If he is not getting the top 2 choices you suggested, I say he should not at all because he has a zoom giving him 2.8 in that range already.  Anything smaller than 1.8 is covering to close in aperture to what he already has.  Just my opinion.
