17-55 is an excellent lens.  There is little reason to have a shorter prime other than cost.  There are also many cheaper third party f2.8 zooms if cost is a factor.

Sounds like you have a good setup already, but if you are in need of the 1.8 or greater, there is no replacement for a prime.  If you find you use your 50mm 1.8 more often than your Tamron when working at the 50mm range, and if you enjoy that 1.8 over the 2.8 significantly, than I say go for the new prime you are looking for.
