But, a point and shoot has a deep depth of field from its fixed lens, so even when it unpredictably focuses on the wrong thing, it rarely matters. When that DSLR is out of focus you will see it far more clearly. If you want to get it right the first time then you'd want one of those wireless remote triggers that allows you to see the live view on the remote. But of course that is another piece of equipment to lose, not to mention much more expensive than the basic remote.
I have never known of a DSLR camera to operate like a point and shoot, at least in the way you want it to.
