Or they could learn fieldcraft and get closer.....but that takes more work and dedication than simply handing over a credit card. The consistently most successful wildlife pros are consistent and successful because of their knowledge of the subject, not because of having a larger budget. They likely do have the higher budget but that is not the reason they succeed when all the rich amateurs do not.

Same with sports, fashion, fine art etc. The big budgets were a result of the superior craftsmanship, not  the cause of it.

That doesn't make any sense, Stan. The vast majority of the d300 owners are amateurs, with jobs outside of photography.  It's simply unrealistic to say that they are lacking and should spend time that they don't have, learning how to do some esoteric trick of fieldcraft, rather than take advantage of the available technology to accomplish the same goal.

It's really silly to expect the amateur sports/wildlife photographer to spend much more money to buy equipment that is less capable than the DX kits they are using.

I'm not saying that people shouldn't learn as much fieldcraft as they can. I am saying that it's ridiculous to deny the benefits of technology.  Saying that one should just get closer, rather than use a long lens on a DX camera, is a lot like saying that one should learn to use a 3 FPS camera rather than an 8 FPS camera, to catch a special moment, when it's simply not necessary to do so.

Kerry

Silly, yes, very silly when considering who we D300 amateur shooters are. Get closer, indeed .... fight with security about walking on the field?! Spray and pray... my  excuse for lack of anticipation or knowledge of the game. And if I have to trade off skinny DOF to avoid  more pounds and more bucks for glass, well, that's me.
