Why so many choices?

My PC is 3 years old and giving me grief with lockups and BSD issues. So I want to build a new PC using some parts from the old PC. My current system is a 1st gen Intel Core i5 760 which is no slouch. I have been trying to decide which processor and mother board I need. I usually buy components that are 2nd or 3rd from the top of the list in ratings and performance so I'm not going for the best of everything. My list is going to be just processor, mother board, RAM, and SSD.
Have you looked at all the choices there are? On Newegg.com just in the Intel processors there are 55 Intel Processors and 318 mother boards that support Intel. Why do we need that many choices? Good grief!
