Sounds as if you're looking for more "reach" - a telephoto lens. Luckily they're good and cheap.

I have a Tamron 55-200 which i bought secondhand and is far better than I expected. There's also a Sigma version (I had one and didn't like it) and there's also a similar Sony one.

Keep taking pictures - the only way to find what works is to try it. And don't forget that for all of us we get a lot of not very good shots. Not maybe total disasters but (a lot) less than wonderful - the ones we show in public are the ones that worked. So it's very common to think - "That's wonderful. Why aren't my shots that good?"
