My hand at tweaking the RAW

This is part of the reason for the discussion. Many people would be more than happy with the first picture, just as many in the past were happy with nothing but Kodachrome film. It's punchy. It's processed for punchiness. It's got those "nice bright colours". And many like bled out highlights and crushed shadows.

The in-camera JPG has a strong graphic appeal, at the expense of many subtleties.

I’m amazed by the level of control there is.  I’m tweaking on these pumpkin festival pics from the weekend still and playing around.  I think I improved over the jpeg from the camera.  You all might not be impressed by it, but it’s fun to tinker with for me anyway.

I made the opposite mistake yesterday, and after messing with the camera, set it as JPEG only by accident. I got these three shots among others. But I am horrified at the lack of control I have over processing them compared with my usual RAW. It takes almost no tweaking at all to lose the colour info in the faces.
