Canon makes this statement for 17-40, as you mentioned. Are other lenses better or did Canon remove this statement for marketing purposes? Who knows. You are welcome to test it on your lenses, but I'd rather use protection Besides, sealing doesn't protect the front element anyway. I'm not sure what your poit is, wash it under a rain?

maiabing actually researched this last year, and the findings were interesting (ref. http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/thread/2986237). Among the non-white weather resistant L lenses:

EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM  +needs front filter

EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM  +needs front filter

EF 17-40mm f/4L USM  +needs front filter

EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM

EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro

EF 50mm 1.2L USM  +needs front filter

EF 85mm 1.2L II USM

EF 24mm 1.4L II USM
