What are your experiences with low temperature extremes while operating Canon Rebels?

I have a Canon Rebel t3i (600D) and I would like to do an extended time-laps (3-4 hours) of the stars while visiting my mom in Northern CA. The only issue is it can get very cold at night (mid to low 30's). I have read a few posts about lubricants freezing in cold conditions. Has anyone actually attempted something like this? How long should I even consider keeping my camera exposed to these elements and does anyone have advice on how to protect the camera in cold conditions? Thank you!
