Canon 60D -> Nikon D600 or not ?
Oct 16, 2012

Hi fellows

Greeting! This is my first time posting in dpreview even though I had been following this forum for a long time. I am just getting into freelance photography, mostly doing product and interior. Lately I am considering doing some events. The ISO from my 60D just won't cut it. I cannot accept noise beyond ISO 650. I am at a tight budget of life right now so maybe I should buy what can to get the job done and upgrade later when I have the dosh.

Here are my gears :

Canon 60D
Canon 17-55 F2.8
Canon 70-200 F4
Nissin 622 (for Canon)
YN 560 I (no ttl only use for off camera)
The reasons I like Nikon are sharper image in high contrast situation. I don't know how the 5D compares to the 7D but this video blows me away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWvaaHqQni0 . I also don't like the saturated colour¬†from my Canon.

Switching to Nikon will be a big project. I will need to sell all my lens, body & the Nissin flash. I will not be able to keep the 60D as a backup which is important for event shooting. So this is my dilemma.
Also the Nikon 70-200 don't have F4 meaning I will need to pay much more for a telephoto. Now I mostly use this for casual purposes but I never know when I will need one for a party. So either I ditch the telephoto or get a Tamron which I don't know if I will like or not.

So here are my options

A)
Nikon D600
Nikkor 24-70 F2.8
(Sell my Canon stuff & add about $9000HKD)

This option has not telephoto nor a backup Camera

B)
Canon 5DM3
Canon 24-70 F2.8
(Sell my 17-55 F2.8 & the Nissin Flash but get to keep my 70-200 F4 & add $25,000HKD)

C)
Nikon D600
Nikkor 24-70 F2.8
Nikon 70-200 F2.8
(Add $18,000HKD - Maybe a couple more K for a second hand backup camera)

D)
Nikon D600
Tamron 24-70 F2.8
Tamron 70-200 F2.8
(Add $10K -  few K for a second hand backup camera)

Now I won't consider the Canon 6D because it does not have dual SD card slot for backup which is important in case the card fails. It also does not have pop up flash.

I am curious to know whether I can use just one lens (Nikkor 24-120 F4) for option C. But not sure whether the F4 would cut it. Since I heard one must have F2.8 for weddings.

These are some of my current images so you can judge the kind of skills I have.

It seems like the 5DM3 option is the most expensive option but with the least amount of effort to sell my existing gears. I have played with it in a shop. It is ok but not extremely impressive. I was very impressed with the D600 though. It is much lighter and seems quicker (maybe due to different lens).

Well please let me know what you guys recommend. It would be super helpful.
