I have the Sigma 17-50/2.8, 24-105, and 70-200/4 IS and the 24-105 is my most used lens used mostly for portraits.  The problem with the 70-200’s on crop is that the wide end at 112mm in 35mm equivalent is getting a little too long for portraits in a lot of circumstances.  This makes it great for outdoor sports shots, but less so for portraits.

If you take the classical albeit loosely defined 85-135mm range for portraits on full frame, that would give you about 50-85mm on crop.  If you want a single zoom to cover that same range, you basically have 2 lens options that are faster than f5.6: the 24-105 and the Sigma 50-150/2.8 OS. There is also a discontinued Tokina 50-135/2.8 but it is hard to find.

I would seriously consider the new 50-150 if your main focus is portraits.  There are two downsides of this lens. One is that it is a lot of money for a lens not capable to be used on full frame and two if you are into sports action, the Sigma’s struggle in servo AF more than Canon USM glass.
