Monitor

I plan on upgrading my hardware in the near future; I currently am using a 24" Asus. While thinking of switching over to a Mac, it was clear that the 27" monitor was beautiful.....Is there any monitor that seems to be the current 'standard?' Is my current Asus acceptable? Sorry for the uninformed questions, but it has been a while since I looked at hardware; I am way out of date.
