If you look closely, the highlight recovery in LR also recovers the color information in the faces. All that reducing overall brightness or reducing highlights on a JPEG does is turning bright white spots into some sort of grey. Now this particular image I could have taken with an iPhone to capture the moment. No need for 7D or G1X - or RAW. But since I never know if there is a shot that I want to keep and work on, and improve as much as possible w/o running into the limitations of a pre-processed JPEG, I am shooting RAW. And I am really not good at correcting sharpness, color saturation, WB and contrast on camera because it is hard to judge the outcome on the camera LCD. Plus, I rather do that when there is time at home and not while taking pictures.
