Kit lens replacement?

Many SLR kits come with the economical 18-55mm lens. I hear this is good value for money but many recommend a change to better glass. If one was looking for a 18mm to 55mm or up to 105mm zoom what would you recommend instead of the kit lens, not too expensive!
