What is the logic of different card slots?

From the responses I sense the manufacturers haven't said why some cameras use two different cards.  Maybe they just want to play it safe and not have a camera become less appealing because its uses a type of card that is falling out of favor.  I am attracted to the d600, and am glad to see both its slots are the same type, in this case SD.
