Comparing some lenses myself, I can say that my personal findings more or less match the results of This applies to both Canon and Nikon glass.

Honestly, both Canon and Nikon have some sh*t glass in their slables which is to be avoided (e.g. Nikon 80-400) but in reality the differences among the modern/recent lenses are much less visible between these two brands than it may seem at first sight based on various forums and tests.

Looking at the 85mm results, I donĀ“t think Canon would be better than Nikon in terms of resolutin in this case:

But Canon is definitely no slouch either, I think in practice they can be considered +/- on the same level (i.e. excellent lenses).
