Greed on your observations. It's a wonder that we get decent cameras, given the tolerances of all the parts involved. After this episode, methinks the only way to get individual attention for a new camera is to document legitimate photographic issues with it and return it for warranty repair.

Here are 100% crops from the upper-righthand corners (where PF was always the worst) of pictures taken before and after the repair, showing the large reduction in PF in the leaves and branches of the tree, as well as the improvement in overall clarity. (The color of the leaves have changed quite a bit in the weeks that passed...)

This camera is now good enough to use for general purposes and not just for its long zoom.
