Is the D600 kit lens considered a good lens?

I currently own only a Nikon 50 mm prime lens 1.8g.  I will be buying a 85 mm 1.8 G In the near future.  I'm a newbie and I primarily shoot portraits, my child, and whatever else I can see.  I just got the D600 kit and camera in the mail and am wondering if I should have just gotten the body and use the extra $500 for the 85 mm lens. Any Advice?
