Don't trust my 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.4 primes...

I haven't used the 50 f/1.4 in a few years. However, when I did (on an older 20D body), AF wide open was also inconsistent. I think that is quite normal with this lens. Not sure it was quite as bad as I get the feeling yours is, though. My limited experience with the 85 f/1.8 had been much better.
