The Amazing 50's
In reply to Windancer, Oct 11, 2012

I've owned the 50mm 1.8D, 1.4D, 1.4 AFS, Sigma 50mm 1.4

Here's my verdict: All of them are quite close, but the best bokeh was with the Sigma 50mm 1.4. The problem with that lens was that it was HUGE and heavy. I had focus issues wide open with the 1.4 AF-S and the 1.4D was better. Neither had great bokeh compared to the Sigma. The regular 1.8D was 100% professional image quality and the build at the price is a non-factor.

Finally there is the 50mm AF-S G 1.8 and this is the happy middle ground for me. Small, sharp, light, good bokeh and PERFECT AF accuracy on the D700 and D800. I miss the Sigma once in a while thought!

Robert
