I only discovered this problem after having a lot of out-of-focus pictures (at f1.8) during a portrait session. From now on, it's AF-C mode for me...

I sold my D7000 before getting the D600, so I wonder if the former has the same bug.

So, just use either AF-C or AF-S. I never used AF-A because it is not predictable. I am planning to get D600 as well.
