I think there are many reasons for limiting the recording times. Marketing, sensor overheating and dodging the camcorder tax are the ones I hear the most.
Also, D7000 uses SD cards formatted as FAT32. This filesystem allows files with maximum filesize of 4GB. The last time I shot video, it took 2.6GB for 19-minute video at max quality, so I guess your video files would be limited to about 30mins anyways. Of course, they could make camera automatically create new files, but you would have to concatenate them later by yourself.
