While playing with the camera, I have noticed the f-stop with the lens will only go wide as f5.6 even at 18mm.  This was at aperture priority so I tried it in manual and the same result.  I then tried a few another lens and sure enough they both move the full range.

Sounds like a dud lens to me, but what do I know?

Just for fun, why don't you remove the lens from the camera and try to manually open the aperture and see what happens.  You can do this by moving the little tab that sticks out of the lens mount, very near where the red/orange mark on the lens is.  If that tab moves freely across it's full movement path, then I really don't know what the answer to your problem might be but I'll suggest it's time for a new lens.

Keep us posted and good luck.

Thanks for this info, but tried it to no avail.  Interestingly, in reading the lens manual, the minimum f-stop at wide (18mm) is suppose to be f22, well mine is f36 across the zoom range.

I plan to take it in soon for the exchange.
