Sorry if this makes a "double" post, as I have replied to this once, but it has not appeared.
Right, the other responders here are correct, but to get a blurred background with a small sensor camera, is difficult, as there is always a large DOF with these cameras. There is an old trick, that was used as a "work around," to alleviate the problem of escessive DOF. It is to switch the camera into MACRO mode. Try it and see if this helps with the type of image that you are wanting to capture. I hope this helps you.
