Preview can't read EXIF

For some reason Preview version 5.5.3 (719.31) can almost never read image dimensions of JPG and ORF files. TIFF and PSD files vary. It can read image dimensions of older (a few years old) JPG files just fine.

Why is this happening, and can I do something to fix this? I am using a Mac-mini (10.7.5).
