Which lens combination: Nikon 24-85 VR & 85 1.8 G or Nikon 24-70 2.8 G?

I'm trying to decide which combo to get. I figure the 24-85VR/85 1.8 G combo would give me more versatility, but the 24-70 2.8 G would simplify things with one semi-fast lens. Either setup would be used for portraiture, strobe photography and event style shooting. Any opinions would be appreciated! Thanks!
