I am not a service person, but rather someone who spends way too much time researching everything I can about cameras :).

The 5DM3 didn't feel the same as a D800 to me, and the pictures with it's paneling on looked suspect to me, so I looked into the issue further.  Unsurprisingly, they are cutting build-quality corners to keep costs down even on their $3500 cameras where Nikon offers full professional build starting at $1100.  The pictures of the 5DM3 body with the paneling on are very misleading, because it covers the plastic below, and leads people to believe it has a similar build to a D300/D800, etc. when really it has the same build as an $800 D7000.  The same was posted on the Canon forum by someone else, and it seemed to surprise a lot of users there as well.  The only difference is that the 5DM3 has 1 extra metal panel on the front of the camera that is not at all structural, and does not improve the strength of the lens mount.

Just food for thought :).

Thank you for your reply - you have my respect for truly rational evaluation of facts. Very rare on forums, as you may have noticed ;-).

See, this is my pet peeve with Canon in general: Except the 1D line, which they certainly have always built to perfection, it seems to me that historically they have always tried to "cut costs" more than Nikon on the models below the 1D line (though I´m afraid everyone is more or less forced to go this way to survive these days). And that they do not build their products to last as long as the competition.... but ARE offering excellent and often class-leading technology, no question about it. OK, I can also understand the argument of moral aging but lets leave that aside, shall we?

Please also note that I´m not a Nikon emotional fanboy, I take cameras as noname tools, I have simply made this conclusion based on facts available to me from a few real engineers and servicemen. Unfortunalety, like I said, Nikon also loosened their so called "tolerances" as I´ve been told recently (I have no illusions about anything in today´s hyperconsumer society).

Still, I´ve got to admit that if starting from the beginning, I would rather get 5DmkIII than D800 today. It seems evident to me that 5DmkIII is simply better balanced and fine-tuned for all around shooting and despite the more flimsy guts, it doesn´t have any issues like the first batched of D800 had (the left AF issue which Nikon kept quiet about). Although I definitely think both the 5DmkIII and the latest Canon lenses are inadequately priced to their overal performance and competition (but of course MARKET is the one to decide, who am I?).

Hope there will be more competition in the full frame market in the future. The terribly oligopoly of Canikon takes its toll more and more... (price increases, lower tolerances etc.), don´t you think?

p.s. to Canon fanboys: Talking about Canon, I really have deep respect for Canon engineers and their potential (I just hate Canon marketing decisions in fact). I think Canon have the best developers and innovators, better than Nikon guys. OK, maybe this year Sony has a slight edge in sensor technology but I would´t underestimated Canon at all - they may start another sensor revolution soon like they did with their CMOS technology (when nobody else believed its potential) ten years ago. Althought nowdays Sony is very strong competitor, it is true.
