Things That CAn be Improved (That Aren't a FX Sensor!)

Just rattling off some simple things that I think would make life better for us here in lieu of always having sensor envy:

  1. Automated AF-fine Tuning with Adaptive Focus Mapping. For me, this is a big one, because there's no way around it; fine tuning your lenses is tedious, especially if you do it properly at 50x focal length. I've since found it easier to use the moire-target method, but this is something that could conceivably be programmed into our existing cameras, having the camera compare PD vs CD autofocus and recording the adjustment value accordingly. It could go one-further by building a focus-map for various focal lengths and focal distances, something that the AF adjustment can't do right now.
  2. Pop-up Microphone. We have pop-up flashes to reduce red-eye, but the camera microphone is right next to the lens mount and picks up the sounds of your camera pathetically trying to autofocus the scene you are taking video of. Setting aside the obvious need to improve video AF, I think  you could turn a dSLR into a better video rig if the microphone could pop away from the camera body, like the flash, and was a higher quality directional microphone. This wouldn't replace the need for a dedicated microphone jack, but it would make video much more usable.
  3. Dedicated Photographer's Tablet. Okay, not a camera improvement, but seriously, where are the tablets that can take a full-sized SD card? Not one dSLR uses microSD... WiFi connectivity is one thing, but even that's not implemented well. Rather than waiting around for the traditional tablet makers to change, why not have one of the camera makers dive in?
  4. Better Camera Documentation. I think we'll be explaining setting a3 on the D7000 for many years to come. Not that we would ever stop helping folks out, but imaging the forum traffic reduction from this alone.
  5. Dedicated Spot Meter/Center Weight Exposure Indicator in View Finder. I've said this many times, but back in the days of film, your exposure gauge was a little needle that bobbed up and down. You would need a full histogram to properly represent what's happening when the camera is in matrix mode, but for spot meter, the little flippy needle would be a nice ergonomic touch, and still useful today.
  6. Focal Length Aware Auto-ISO While I prefer the way that Nikon's auto ISO works, the one thing I like about Canon's is that it's focal length aware. I system combining both, focal length awareness and shutter/ISO parameter adjust-ability would be nice.
  7. Illuminated Buttons and Controls Because a flashlight is a necessary part of my kit for outdoor night shots. It's not the end of the world, but it's clumsy.
  8. Locking Lens Caps. A lock of the spring mechanism to prevent the cap from detaching, especially inside your bag if you are not careful inserting and taking out your camera.
