What is the logic of different card slots?

In reading the wish lists for the D400 I haven't seen anyone saying they would like Dual card slots - one CF slot and one SD slot.

I have a D300 and love the idea of two slots.  But I want the second slot to be the same as the first.  I don't want to carry both CF and SD cards.  I have never understood the logic of using two different types of cards in one camera.  Is there any benefit whatsoever? Has any camera maker ever explained why it does this?
