VR reduces that motion blur in the AFsensor images, which dramatically improves AF performance.

Well if that is the case then I'll happily accept the new behaviour.

As would I.  This is the reason that I don't (and never have) use the AF-On button as my primary method of focus on my current bodies.

P.S. though if it really is a bug, and the AF performace improvement is so dramatic having VR on during AF, I wonder why it has taken so long for Nikon to get around to changing the behaviour... how many bodies are out there with the old behaviour, and I think the D800 is the only one with VR tied to AF-ON?  I still think that an option would be good to keep everyone happy.

Who knows why Nikon does what it does?  I have 4 bodies that I use now, where the shutter button is my primary method of focus, because I generally want the benefit of VR. I wouldn't be opposed to having an option to turn it off. Can't imagine why anyone would be opposed.
