50mm on FX is like your normal eyesight view. So visualize it and think... However for portraits, i wont find the bokeh on either f/1.4 or f/1.8 that outstanding due to it sshort focal length but it is noticeable. I like the 50mm f/1.8G , its great value for $$$. That being said it's meant to be slightly better overall in comparison to the 50mm f/1.4G.
Oh yes on a sidenote, a better portrait lens is usually something around the lines of 85 f1.8 or 105/135 f2... 50mm is abit short for portraits and not enough to get a noticably outstanding bokeh
