Nikon 300/4 for wildlife, including birds and birds-in-flight
Oct 9, 2012

I am totally new to wildlife and bird photography, but I do want to get my hands dirty shooting some of that stuff. This will be part of a longer trip I'm planning, so weight is of importance, not to mention cost - I'm not about to rush off to buy a 600/4 until I have way more experience.

I am debating what kind of setup to get. One lens I am looking at is the Nikon 300/4. Looks like I can pick up a used one for less than a grand, and if I combine it with the 1.4x teleconverter I already have, I can get to 420/5.6. I own a D800, which in DX mode then can go to 670mm, or even longer if I crop a bit more.

What do you think of this setup? Will the 300/4 + 1.4x be able to AF fast enough for wildlife and birds? What about birds-in-flight?

Any other options I should consider?
