Directional lighting and dark eye sockets

Hey guys,

I've been experimenting with reflective umbrellas.... When I use them to illuminate a model, the problem is that the far eye always looks too dark.  Even if I place a reflector on the side opposite the umbrella, the model still looks like he has a black eye.

I've generally been putting the speedlite & umbrella at about a 45 degree angle to the camera, but I experimented with all kinds of setups.  I attached two sample pictures.  These were the good ones and the model still looks like he got punched in the face.  In particular, the area just to the right of the bridge of his nose looks very dark.  Any ideas?

Thanks!
