I'm a fan of Thom's books, they are certainly a lot better than Nikons manuals, I've had the D100, D200, D3 and now the D800 versions off him . I haven't read all of either the D800 manuals yet from either Nikon nor Thom but what I have read has been better, more informative and easier to understand in Thom's
Thom doesn't just explain well what all the functions of the camera do, he does a great job of explaining why to use certain settings and what to watch out for.
